INTRODUCTION TO MYSELF AND THE SPORTS CREW BLOG

Goals, plans and reflection

My coaching philosophy has been to help individuals achieve their sporting potential, their physical potential, to be as active as they possibly can and to see the benefits sport and physical activity can bring to their lives mentally, physically and socially. My philosophy comes from values and beliefs that I have accumulated throughout my life, both personally and professionally. I’ve always be involved in some sort of sport or physical activity from a young age. I’ve been mostly interested in football as a young boy, supporting Liverpool FC and playing on a Sunday morning from the age of 7/8 to adolescence.
As I progressed through high school, I began to realise my interest for PE and my future ambitions for working with Sport in some way began to grow. After completing GCSE PE, I reflected on my experiences as a participant in school lessons, sports clubs and teachers who taught me, I began to think of how much better it could have been, how much more I could have been inspired to be active, try other sports and be pushed to do even more than I was doing. After thinking this, I set my sights on a NVQ PE and School sport Apprenticeship which allowed me to practice coaching, to practice my philosophy with children in a primary school setting.

In Frodsham CE I got to teach all sorts of PE lessons, gymnastics, dance, invasion games, net and wall games etc. I got the the added responsibility of being the sports coordinator, which meant I coached school clubs, intra school competitions, out of school competitions, sporting  charity events and anything sport related for children. I only really developed my focus on PE in secondary school, I did think "would this not be better if that mentality was encouraged at an earlier age?" Although football is a key passion of mine at a young age, I wasn't encouraged by teachers to try other sports in primary school or high school, even at a high school stage, there wasn't a big enthusiastic coach or teacher telling me what they think I should do! once I became a coach in schools, I found the popularity of football to be huge, I made the effort to improve my knowledge in other sports by gathering my Level 2 dodgeball and football, CPD courses in Tag Rugby, Quick-sticks, dance, Mini Red tennis, indoor athletics and more. I done this to help myself, help children approach new sports by giving them a taste of a sport in school before encouraging them to approach sports clubs outside of school.

Few years further down the line, I have my own business (JCPE primary) helping schools and teachers improve their PE and School Sport provision, to reach a greater scale of children and help the younger generation have a healthier attitude towards physical activity and to achieve my personal goal of children at a younger age (Primary school) being active and involved in sport and physical activity, something which I feel my generation didn't get the opportunity to have.
In this blog, I aim to help Y6 pupils be role models for the younger children and promote their own lunchtime clubs, where they can encourage young inactive children to enjoy lunchtime games, sports and play. My plan is to support the children in their planning, delivery and reflection of their clubs, while supplying the school with resources that is needed to achieve this successfully. This blog will follow the journey of this project throughout the experience, showing myself as a coach but also as a mentor to a whole class of Y6 pupils (28) who have all eagerly volunteered to be a par for this fantastic project. Their reflections to being in charge of a club and what we find as a team and if the Sports can problem solve to improve their club!
It's important for children to be active, to play and use their breaks in school time effectively. Research undertaken in recent years have noted the number of inactive children at break and lunchtime has risen. You can probably imagine what this can lead to, obesity, social struggles naming a couple of problematic circumstances. Attached is a TED talk from Stuart Brown, he looks into the sciences of play and how this maybe being overlooked in modern times.
