Review of leaders education processes

Review of leaders education processes

In Today's blog we look at the journey of the project so far, the pan we had in place for the project and what we've learnt. We are currently around the halfway mark of the project, so now would be a good time to reflect on the hits and misses of the JCPE Sports Crew Project and as normal resources related today's blog will be included at the end! Hope you find it interesting and useful.

The Plan

If you didn't know already, our plan has been to increase the number of children being active and socially engaged at lunchtime. We set up a project were Year 6 pupils ran their own lunchtime sport clubs. We hoped for the leaders to gain some challenging yet useful experiences, helping build character before the school year comes to an end and their education experience continues into high school. For the participants we hoped they would gain some critical 'active time' at lunchtime and in return all children would be rewarded with well known toys for the excellent pursuit and commitment to the cause. We aimed to supply MDA with resources and knowledge of how to support a fully functioning lunchtime sport club and help the PE co-ordinator and the school achieve those all important 'active-children' stats for their school games and OFSTED reports. It's hopefully going to be a win-win!

The Process

This would consist of 5 stages to help improve the club and the leaders as the year goes on, it was a theory inspired by Siedentop's Sport Education model. We Loved the idea of bring an experience that was linked to sport and how we see it out of school, how our children see it on the TV. This would include coaching roles, media roles, athlete roles, stat keeping roles, award ceremony's etc... But for the purpose of the club, there were small alterations that had to be made to ensure there wasn't an overwhelming pressure on the Y6 leaders work load. We wanted to make sure the children felt as though this project was something to be proud of but at the same time, make sure there's been plenty of time for the children to grasp the concepts and ease their experience of running the club. Below are the 5 phases of the club, with all 5 phases planned to be in place by the Summer, ready for a very special Sports Day.

The leaders are currently around the phase 4 mark as they have began to incorporate a number of different sports into their club and using competition as a way to bring some children together to socialise.

Results so far

One of our biggest challenges we had in our sights from the beginning is maintaining the interest of the SportsCrew's interest in the project. But what we've found is a hunger to get better as been the result so far. Maybe the children are seeing the impact they are having on the school and the feeling that brings them is wanting them to continue.

The participants of the club has stayed in strong numbers and the view of the club from someone from the outside looking in, can clearly see not just the improvement of the club and leaders quality but the enjoyment it's bringing to the younger children of the School.

Midday assistants have credited the club a success so far as they have noticed the hard work of the club leaders. The main improvement the MDA's have noticed is a decrease in lunchtime issues. The focus the sports crew has brought to lunchtimes has managed to lower lunchtime arguments between children, less trouble making and lower need for first aid, which relives some of the stresses for MDA . The MDA that I Have been working with at Frodsham CE (in the picture below) Has helped the the leaders process of the club to progress comfortably, and his observations of the club has become a lot more detailed.

Resources

The coaching/ teaching process is incredibly important. The demands of the coaching processes are also incredibly complex, plan, deliver and analysis. Our roles has been to open up the Y6 leaders to just small parts of what it may be to be a leader and at times to be their own little version of a coach, but a main part of it was to get the children to not plan but to think about how they will run their lunchtime session, deliver the session and at the end, along with the MDA have a discussion about what they thought about the session, Did it work? could it be better? how do we make it better? and I think this gives a really mature philosophy to the children. We at JCPE and along with the support of the staff at the school, look to take up a mentor role to the leaders. Without this the club would not survive, everyone must play their part. You might be wondering why the coach/teacher education process would help or offer your PE practices below are a number of different resources to help you see why.

Once again thank you for reading and for your continued support,

JC
