Safeguarding and Care Practices in the JCPE SportsCrew Project

Safeguarding and Care Practices in the JCPE SportsCrew Project

In today's blog we look at the Safeguarding procedures the SportsCrew project has and also the impact the Christmas Period had on the children in the Sports Crew.

The Christmas period proved hectic and challenging for the SportsCrew, but the final day of school proved to be an enjoyable end to the second half-term at Frodsham CE Primary School with the SportsCrew's 2nd prize giveaway. Before we dive into the children's brilliant end to the Christmas period in school, we'll inform you into the safeguarding precautions we take at JCPE, within the SportsCrew Project. The philosophy we have at JCPE is to encourage children to take on more responsibility, challenge themselves and educate. The project allows more self education by creating environments and roles for children to reflect on themselves and ultimately over a long period of time develop character. We believe this has a fantastic impact on the children but what comes with this is a greater need for safeguarding of the children as they experience this new role and experiences it brings.

MDA Care Relationship

The care of the children is at the top of our priority list, as much as we want the children to have fun and engage in sport, it's vital we keep the children safe. At the beginning of the programme, we make sure that the children are trained with the basics in keeping younger children safe in games and sports, but the main safeguarding responsibilities are given to the midday assistants (MDA). Before the club begins, we work closely with the MDA's, to make sure they know what they should be looking out for and how/when they will need to intervene in the SportsCrew's Lunchtime clubs. Before the club begins, a mental risk assessment of the area needs to be completed, observations of the club need to be overseen throughout the club's sessions and final debrief discussion is  completed at the end of each club to allow the children to reflect.

The School's Safeguarding procedures

It's imperative for our project to work alongside what the school's current safeguarding procedures are. Back in September, we conducted meetings with the schools head teacher to make sure the project doesn't intervene with any safeguarding procedures the school has in place. The Prize Giveaways are held on the last day of each half term and the stalls are operated at the end of the school day, just before the children are collected by their parents or guardians. We make sure that in the hectic moments of the stall operating that parents are not allowed around the stall, we do this by setting the stall up in the school hall. This is where children collect their prize before being collected by their guardian.

Media

It's important to make sure that pictures and videos of the SportsCrew members that are shared through the internet, have first had parental consent. The school itself has this information for it children for the likes of twitter and school website, but we at JCPE also ask parents of the Y6 class (SportsCrew leaders) if we can have consent for social media uses, website needs and promotional ideas.

Our Policy

Finally, we have a policy to insure the key outline of what we want to achieve;
  • Create a fun, safe and engaging environment
  • Help develop happy, responsible and resilient children in a caring environment
  • Make learning fun, engaging and progressive for all children, while encouraging each individual child to challenge themselves

2nd Prize Giveaway

The SportsCrew's 2nd Prize Giveaway was another huge success, with a load of children from across KS2 turning out to collect their prize. Eight new children from the SportsCrew operated the stall and performed interviews with more participants from all KS2 year groups. It was defiantly smiles all-round on the last day of term just before Christmas.

Word had spread, because a number of parents begin to ask more about the project. This shows an encouraging sign that the project in school is making conversion pieces between child and parents at home. Which is certainly an encouraging sign for the impact the club is having on the children.

Thanks once again for you continued support, resources on care practices and safeguarding are just below.
